Obituary

Rachel Kesler Shive, 98, of Salisbury passed away peacefully on Monday May 1st, 2017 at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury surrounded by family and friends.

Rachel was born July 19th, 1918 in Rowan County to the late John H. and Ida Garwood Kesler of Salisbury and remained in Rowan County her entire life where she graduated from Boyden High School and was employed by Cone Mills for 40 years, retiring from the spinning room. She was a long time member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church and then the Shiloh Reformed Church after her marriage to John Hoy Shive in 1943. She was an active participant in the co-ed Sunday School class, Shiloh senior group, and morning circle.

Mrs. Shive was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, John Hoy Shive, on February 8, 1996, son Randy Allen Shive on March 5, 1996 and son Darrell Lynn Shive on January 9, 2014. In addition to her immediate family, she was also preceded in death by four sisters, Frances K. Agner, Dorothy Elaine K. Caddell, Lucille K. Yates, and Edna L. Wensell, and one brother, Worth T. Kesler.

Survivors include, one sister, Rose K. Gregory of Chattanooga, TN, daughter-in-law Cathy Shive of Salisbury, grandchildren, Chad A. Shive of Raleigh, NC, Brooke Shive-Ray (Jeff) of Coinjock, NC and Jonathan L. Shive (Debbie) of Salisbury and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be in the Fireplace Lobby at Shiloh Reformed Church from 3-4 pm, Friday May 5, 2017 with service immediately following at 4 pm, conducted by Rev. Richard Myers. Memorials may be made to Shiloh Reformed Church, P.O. Box 308, Faith, NC 28041, the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks located at 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury, NC 28144 or Rowan Hospice and Pallative Care, 720 Grove Street, Salisbury, NC 28144. The family is being served by Lyerly Funeral Home.
